Cracks in the works

I ran across this tree-like crack in the ice of a very small pond and was drawn to how it was emanating from the small rock at the edge. I think I shot about a dozen different perspectives, some with the rock more prominent, but in the end I liked this “shot from above” look the best. Processing was another story. I spent…

Don’t like “Likes”

I’ve recently have been entering my work in contests, mostly just for fun and feedback and to wile away the winter days. Most “contests”, or competitions,  I have been entering have traditional judging, in the sense that a judge or judges choose what they think are the best images of the competition. Those are fine, I don’t have a problem with that…

At least I tried (and other good news)

Grass-cicles Last night, after I finished my post, I walked down to the store on the corner. It was dark out and on the way back to my house I noticed the frozen grass in my yard reflecting the lights from nearby businesses. It was a cool (literally) looking scene and I thought I would try to capture it. Try,…

Icicles melt

We had some freezing rain along with a little more snow last night. My truck was encased in the frozen fun and before I thawed it out, I grabbed a few photos of the icicles hanging from it in various spots. It would have been a good day to head out into the woods and get some frozen nature shots…

365-347 Baby it’s cold outside

These “job-site” photos will be coming to an end soon and, hopefully, I’ll be able diversify a little for the final weeks of my 365. Considering the circumstances of being basically in one place all day, I found an amazing amount of subjects. I worked at making mundane normal things (normal for a landfill construction site, at least) look somewhat interesting,…

365-56 No extra effort award

For my 365 choice, I just liked the colors here, especially the gradation on the wall. I would have liked the shot to be a hair sharper but the light level was pretty low, considering the focal length. Plus a few of the shots could have benefited from a smaller aperture. I could have boosted the ISO more but I…

365-40 Cold facts

So you’re probably thinking, “David, ice AGAIN?” It has been a prominent subject of mine this winter but it’s the one thing I see when I look around. I wonder if people who live near the beach in a warm climate get tired of palm trees, sand, and surf pictures. I somehow doubt it.  I actually wanted to try some processing options…

365-16

Watching too much playoff football this weekend (go Steelers!) instead of finding photo subjects. I’m still holding off taking a picture of my coffee though. Out to the porch and captured some ice hanging from the downspout. There’s a bit of a creepy face in there somewhere at least. Pentax K20D, DA17-70 Center Ice

365-9

I tried experimenting today with macro by reversing my Super-Takumar 28mm lens on my K20D. The only problem was I don’t have a proper reversing ring and I was handholding the lens over the mount. Hard to do at such close range and it allowed light leaks. I was close on a few but most were pretty bad. After that failed…
