Yes, no, yes, no, maybe

That’s the way I feel about this shot. While on the Pitt campus the other day, my wife and I were walking past Heinz Chapel (which is a spectacular building in its own right) and there was a sign that said a wedding was taking place and not to enter. Through the open door you could see the bride and my wife said I should grab a photo from outside. It was a tricky shot with the mixed indoor/outdoor lighting and wide dynamic range and I didn’t think it worked out too well technically. At least in color. When I converted to black and white I had more room to play with the tones and dodging and burning to rescue it the best I could. I’m still undecided but I’ll see what you think.

I think there is an emotional connection. There is always a story with a weddin.

I’m assuming fun was had by all shortly after I shot this.

That’s a tricky photo. Such a wide range between light and dark. Still, I think you did a great job, especially shooting this ‘on the fly’ as it were. Would have liked to seen a little bit more of the men, but then again, the isolation of the bride really works too. If you’d boosted the men more it is likely you would have blown out the wedding gown. You did good.

Thanks. The B&W definitely helped as the door on the left was red and really distracting. I did want to highlight the gown and keep everything else in shadow with just enough detail to show that there were others there. Of course I would have liked to have gotten a better shot but I wasn’t invited 🙂
