How about something different (from me at least)?

Different from the things I usually post on here but not too different from what a lot of other people shoot. A doe, a deer, a female deer, with a bit of a drop of golden sun thrown in. Sure I have shot deer before (photographically speaking, I’m not a hunter), but most of the photos have been somewhat lame. Not that I’m saying that this one isn’t lame, it’s just better technically than the ones in the past.

I shot this in the local cemetery where the deer are quite approachable. I wasn’t planning on taking wildlife photos when I headed out, I was just wanting to test a new lens that I recently purchased. The cemetery was a good place to check the focusing and sharpness of the lens with the varied surfaces and textures. While I was on a hill shooting some old tombstones at different focal lengths, I noticed the deer seemed to be multiplying around me. I then saw a couple of people on the hill below me trying to photograph deer and they were causing the deer to run up the hill. I didn’t want to waste a good opportunity so I switched to “wildlife photographer” and took some deer portraits. The big buck was a little more elusive so I couldn’t get any good pics of it, so I stuck with the smaller deer.

You probably won’t find my work in an issue of Field and Stream anytime soon but it’s fun to go off course from the norm once in a while.
