The man with the ham(burger)

Just your average 20′ cowboy with a burger statue.

I stopped in a convenience store parking lot to make a conference call for work today and the whole time I sat in my truck looking at this giant cowboy, which sits at the restaurant next door to the store. I’ve seen it a few times before and always thought of grabbing a photo but it was always around lunch time when the restaurant was busy or the lighting was really bad.

While the lighting wasn’t particularly good this time, it was mid afternoon and there weren’t many people around so it was easy for me to take a few pics. I did want to get more of a full “figure” photo but when I got up close I saw the buildings and wires were quite distracting so I focused on a simple composition. I still wanted something for a sense of scale so I tried to include some trees in the shot. And the only way to do that was to shoot at an odd angle. While some of the “horizon leveling” zealots out there may poo-poo the angle, I don’t care. Sure he looks like he’s falling over but it adds….uhm, drama?

The image is presented here in black and white, keeping with my theme for the month. However, I think it works a little better in color, to better emphasis the juicy red tomato ;-), so I posted a color image on Flickr if you’re interested.
