Numbers game

I got to walk around some old Victorian townhouses today in one of my favorite cities to explore – Wheeling, West Virginia. I’ve posted a number of architectural shots here on my blog in the past that were taken in or around Wheeling as I find it a fascinating and approachable city. It has a rich history and there are a…

Playing with fire

Fired up the charcoal grill for dinner today and as I was watching the flames burn I liked the contrast against the open lid of the grill. Not wanting to simply shoot the flames against the black background, I opened the circular vent on the grill lid and used that as another element in the photo. It doesn’t make sense but…

Woodsy

A little diversion from the carnival and into the woods of West Virginia. Just a lot of trees there.

Carnival overload

Are you ready for more carnival pictures? Sure you are!! I hope I’m not boring everyone with the “fair” based photos of late but I’m kind of liking all of the color. As you can tell from past posts I tried to vary my approach while shooting. I stayed away from out-and-out people pics, which would be the WAY obvious…

I called it “Flash”

Another shot from the local county fair, this time using a combination of techniques. I started with a panned slow shutter shot of the carousel horse as it went by. During processing, I did a straight version but wondered what it would look like with some textures. For some reason I always want to add textures to carousel horse photos.…

It’s your show

While wandering around downtown Pittsburgh, I came across this art installation. It’s part of Project Pop-Up and I think it’s a creative way to use vacant store fronts, whereas in the town I live they would just put a display of lawn tractors from a local dealer. I love this kind of thing. To me its part of what makes…

I could have gone normal

While enjoying some cool live jazz and a few cocktails with my wife at NOLA last evening, I thought I would try to get some pics of the band on our way out. The thought of it was one thing but the execution was another. The lighting was typical for a bar/restaurant – dark, so that was one strike. Behind the band,…

Playing with crayons

I imagine you would go through a whole box of crayons if you were to color in this scene. This is a grab shot from the local fair and although it doesn’t have a whole lot to offer as far as composition it certainly makes up for it in the amount of color! I probably should have toned down the…

Down below

On a two-hour commute home from work yesterday I spotted a sign for a scenic overlook ahead and thought that it may be of interest. When I arrived I saw that the parking lot was empty (it wasn’t exactly on a well-traveled road) and I pulled in to check it out, mostly for future reference as the time of day…

Room for square

It’s square crop time. This is one of those compositions that just worked best that way. The remainder of the picture was just the left side of the front tank but I thought the square crop emphasized the lines and angles better. Or maybe I’m just seeing things.
